Overcoming the Fear of the Unknown

As we all continue to deal with the impacts of COVID-19, many of you may be experiencing fear and anxiety. This is normal, especially with something with such wide ranging impacts. Overcoming this fear, particularly of the unknown, can be a challenging endeavor, but it can be done.

Fear has been defined in several ways; however, the most basic definition of fear is an emotional response based on the fact that we’re faced with something unfamiliar or impending danger.

When we experience fear, several psychological and physiological responses take place all at the same time.

  • Psychological events include feeling emotionally overwhelmed, having high levels of anxiety, and even feeling terrified.

  • Physiological responses include a faster heart rate, shallow breathing, and similar effects.

Experiencing fear can greatly impact your view on life, your confidence levels, and even the potential that you have as an individual. While the world continues to watch and take precautions, here are some strategies you can use to overcome your fears.

  1. Determine the underlying root of your fears. How can you identify the cause of your fears? An insightful look at your life might reveal the answer. By recognizing what causes your fears, it’s likely you can overcome them with great success!

  2. Educate yourself. Many times we're fearful of things we don't have much knowledge about. So educate yourself. Whether it be about this current disease or if you should undertake that new business endeavor, the more you know, the more you can prepare yourself which will put your mind at ease.

  3. Tame your thoughts. While we all want to stay updated, if that's all you do 24/7 you'll continue to reinforce the fear which then becomes your reality. Tame your thoughts by using meditation or finding a distraction so you don't get consumed by things you can't control.

Overcoming your fear of the unknown is a difficult undertaking. However, if you take the time to engage in these three steps, you’ll discover a renewed peace and happiness within your heart!
